University Specialist Study Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Care Medicine
Course: Fundamentals of Intensive Care Medicine
Course coordinator: Janja Tarčuković, MD, PhD, assistant professor
Department: Department of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology, Emergency and Intensive Care Medicine
The course is intended for physicians in specialist training in anaesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care medicine, as well as participants of the corresponding university specialist postgraduate programme. It provides a systematically structured theoretical foundation in contemporary intensive care, with an emphasis on the integration of physiology, pathophysiology, clinical diagnostics and evidence-based therapeutic strategies in critical care settings. Teaching is organised according to the flipped classroom model, meaning that participants independently acquire theoretical content through asynchronous online learning units. Through recorded lectures, recommended specialist literature and interactive self-assessments, participants build the theoretical foundation required for practical application. Time spent in contact (onsite) teaching is fully dedicated to workshops, structured as interactive simulations of various critical conditions, clinical case analyses and group discussions. This approach enables the development of higher-order cognitive skills, from interpretation and application to clinical evaluation and decision-making in complex situations within intensive care units. By fully integrating e-learning and practical workshops, the course promotes independent, reflective and collaborative learning aimed at acquiring the competencies that define a modern intensive care specialist.
