Overview of Medical Education at the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka

Medical education at the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka encompasses all three levels of medical education, including undergraduate, graduate and integrated study programmes, postgraduate studies, and lifelong learning. The Faculty’s distinctive reputation is founded on contemporary student-centred approaches to higher education, the development of professional and academic competencies, and the application of innovative teaching methods aligned with the needs of the healthcare system and the evolving healthcare professions.

Undergraduate, Graduate and Postgraduate Education

The Faculty offers six undergraduate, graduate and integrated study programmes, a Doctoral School, and 22 postgraduate specialist programmes. The aim of all study programmes is to equip students with the competencies required for successful and timely entry into the global labour market. These programmes are based on the strategic objectives of both the Faculty and the University and reflect the four purposes of higher education defined by the Council of Europe: preparing students for active citizenship and future careers (including enhancing employability), supporting their personal development, creating a broad foundation of advanced knowledge, and fostering research and innovation. A full list of programmes and detailed information are available on the Faculty’s official website: : Study programmes – Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka.

The Faculty also offers continuing professional development programmes, with particular emphasis on teacher training in the field of medical education. These programmes are delivered within the Centre for Improving Teacher Competencies and Communication Skills, and are characterised by state-of-the-art approaches to lifelong learning, including digital education. Professional Development of Teacher

Centre for Improving Teacher Competencies and Communication Skills was established in 2017 as a separate organisational unit, in response to growing trends and the need to provide structured and systematic high-quality professional support for the professional development of academic staff in the field of medical education within the institution. Its primary aim is to ensure continuous and diverse training and development opportunities in medical education, including the acquisition and enhancement of teaching competences, mastery of medical education methodology, and the implementation of both traditional and modern teaching methods and technologies in teaching practice, in line with principles of good practice. The Centre’s activities are divided into seven main areas, including continuing professional development, the organisation of scientific and professional conferences, research activities, publishing, educational projects, peer review, and innovation recognition. Lists of programmes and detailed information are available on the Faculty’s official website (in Croatian): Centar za unaprjeđenje nastavničkih kompetencija i komunikacijskih vještina – Medicinski fakultet u Rijeci.
